Proficiency in Art Program

General Requirements

Principle 39: (1) The study of Proficiency in Art is a higher education program equivalent to a doctorate, which aims to present an original work of art, and a superior and creative performance in music and arts.

(2) The proficiency in art program consists of at least 240 ECTS credits with a total of 21 credits and at least 7 courses, not less than 60 ECTS in an academic semester, and applications and works such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation for the students who were admitted to the program with an MA degree. It also consists of at least 300 ECTS credits with 14 courses, not less than 42 credits, applications and works such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation for the students who were admitted to the program with an BA degree.

(3) The student can take courses from other higher education institutions with the recommendation of the head of the department and the approval of the institute administrative committee. While the students admitted with a master's degree take a maximum of two courses, the students admitted with a bachelor's degree can take a maximum of four courses.

 

Application and Admission

Principle 40: (1) Applicants must have a bachelor's or master's degree to apply for proficiency in art, and the applicants who apply with a master's degree, except those who have graduated from the faculties of fine arts, conservatory, and equivalent programs of other faculties, must score at least 55 in the ALES verbal score type, and the applicants with a bachelor’s degree must have at least 80 in the ALES verbal score type.

(2) Those who apply to the proficiency in art program with a bachelor's degree must have a minimum GPA of 3 out of 4 or an equivalent score. 50% of the ALES score, 35% of the diploma grade point average and 15% of the foreign language score are taken as basis when those who will apply for the proficiency in arts program are admitted to this program. 50% of the ALES score, 35% of the graduate diploma grade average and 15% of the foreign language score are taken as basis for the admission of those who will apply to the proficiency in art program with a master's degree. Regarding this assessment, the reference letter that will be provided by the applicants, the composition indicating why they want to be proficient in the art, international standard exams and other similar documents are determined by the department.

(3) In admission to the proficiency in art program, it is compulsory to get at least 55 points from the foreign language exam other than their first language.

 

 

 

The Period of Completing the Program

Principle 41: (1) The period for completing the proficiency in art program is 8 semesters for those who are admitted with a master's degree -excluding scientific preparation program- regardless of whether they enroll for each semester and starting from the term lectures are given. The maximum completion period is 12 semesters for them. Moreover, it is 10 semesters for those admitted with a bachelor's degree and the maximum completion period is 14 semesters.

(2) The maximum period of successfully completing the course credits required for the proficiency in art program is 4 semesters for those admitted with a master's degree and 6 semesters for those who are accepted with a bachelor's degree. The student who cannot successfully complete the course credits within this period or who cannot achieve the minimum GPA by the university is dismissed from the institute.

(3) A student who successfully completes his course credits and practices, but cannot complete his thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation, etc. until the end of maximum 12 semesters or 14 semesters stated before is dismissed from the program.

 (4) On the condition that they have fulfilled the required credit load, project and other similar requirements, the students who have applied to the proficiency in art program with a bachelor's degree are awarded with a master's degree without thesis if they have fulfilled the required conditions and they demand it.

Supervisor Assignment

Principle 42: (1) Head of the department of the institute assigns a supervisor from the university staff for each student to advise the selection of courses and practices as well as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation. The supervisor proposes the subject and the title of dissertation, exhibition, project, recital, concert, presentation determined by a supervisor and the student together to the institute. This proposal is finalized by the decision of the institute administrative committee. The supervisor is appointed by the end of the first semester at the latest. In cases that the qualification of proficiency in arts requires more than one other supervisor, a second supervisor may be appointed. In order to carry on the studies such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation in Proficiency in Art programs, it is necessary to have directed at least one master's thesis that was successfully completed. The second supervisor may also be among non-university staves who have a doctorate / art proficiency degree.

(2) The supervisor is selected among faculty members and lecturers with a doctorate / art proficiency.

(3) The supervisor can be changed by the decision of the board of directors and the decision of the institute administrative committee based on the justified recommendation of head of department. In cases of excuses such as long-term domestic / abroad assignment, getting permission, illness, change of institution that will prevent the supervisor from performing his / her duty, the supervisor may be changed by the decision of the board of directors and the decision of the institute administrative committee based on the justified recommendation of head of department.

Outcomes of the Studies of Proficiency in Art

Principle 43: (1) The student who writes a thesis defends his / her studies such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation orally in front of the jury by writing the text that explains and documents the outcomes, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation in accordance with the thesis writing guide of the relevant institute.

(2) The student presents his/her thesis to the supervisor the time before defense and completing his/her thesis or study for which the correction is given. The supervisor, together with his opinion that the thesis is defensible, sends the thesis to the relevant institute through digital media and in 7 copies without paperback via the department of art. The Institute receives the plagiarism report for the thesis and sends it both the supervisor and the jury members with a copy of the thesis. If a real plagiarism is detected in the data in the report, the thesis is sent to the institute administrative committee to be decided with its justification.

(3) The jury of proficiency in art is appointed with the recommendation of the supervisor and the institute head of the department and the approval of the institute board of directors. The jury consists of five main and two substitute members, including the supervisor and at least two of the members must be among non-university staff. The relevant board of directors decides whether the supervisor has the right to vote. If the supervisor does not have any right, the jury consists of six main and two substitute members. Moreover, the second supervisor can take part in the jury without the right to vote.

(4) Jury members meet in a month at the latest from the date the thesis or text is submitted to them and take the student to the exam. The exam consists of the presentation of the study and the following question and answer section. The exam is open to lecturers, graduate students and listeners who are interested in the field. Substitute members are invited to the exam instead of the main jury members who could not attend the defense exam due to an excuse by the head of the relevant department. Defense exam cannot be held with missing members and without the supervisor. For the exam that cannot be held on the announced day, the situation is reported and announced to the relevant institute by the department. A new exam date is appointed, and a second exam is held within fifteen days. The institute board of directors decides what to do about the juries who cannot convene for the second time.

 (5) After the exam, the jury with absolute majority make a decision of acceptance, rejection or correction about the student's proficiency in art such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation and this session is closed to the audience. Students whose thesis and study of proficiency in art are accepted, are considered successful. This decision is reported to the relevant institute within three days following the examination by the head of the institute department. If a student’s thesis and study of proficiency in art are found to be unsuccessful and rejected, the student is dismissed from the relevant program. The student given a correction about his/her proficiency in art makes the necessary corrections within six months at the latest and defends his/her studies of proficiency in art such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, representation before the same jury. If the student is found unsuccessful and his/her study of proficiency in art is not accepted at the end of this defense, he/she is dismissed from the relevant program. If the students who are not successful in proficiency in art such as thesis, exhibition, project, recital, concert, and representation make a request, they are awarded with a master's degree without thesis provided that they have fulfilled the required credit load, project and other similar requirements.

Diploma in Proficiency in Art

Principle 44: (1) A diploma that determines the field according to the characteristics of the art branch approved by YÖK is given to the student who is successful in the study of proficiency in art provided that the other conditions are met. The date of graduation is the date on which the signed copy of the thesis is submitted to the relevant institute by commission of jury.

(2) The student who submits at least three hardcover copies of his thesis to the relevant institute within one month from the date of entry to the thesis examination and the thesis is found compatible with the thesis writing guide, deserves a doctoral degree providing that the student is successful in thesis defense and meets the other conditions. The institute administrative committee can extend the delivery period for a maximum of one more month upon application. A student who does not fulfill these conditions cannot obtain a temporary graduation certificate and / or diploma and cannot also benefit from his/her rights. The student is dismissed from the relevant program in case the maximum period expires.

(3) A copy of thesis of the proficiency in art is sent to YÖK by the relevant institute electronically for scientific research and activities within three months from the submission of the thesis.
